Cloud topiary and Marigolds at Eden Gardens

Are you wearing orange today? Orange is the colour used to help celebrate our day of inclusion and cohesion... a day when 'everyone belongs’.

The Day coincides with the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination and it aim to get people to participate in their community, respect cultural and religious diversity and foster sense of belonging for everyone.

Held every year on 21 March, we haave many stunning orange flowers both in the garden and for sale.  Choose from flowering Strelitzia 'Bird of Paradise', marigolds, dahlias and chyrsanthemums... or use some stunning orange striped foliage in your garden like Cana 'Tropicanna'.

As the weather cools it’s time to revisit the vegie patch.  Start removing all your spent summer crops and rejuvenate you plots with some mushroom compost.  This is the perfect way of adding both organic matter and calcium into the soil, ensuring winter crops like cabbages, kale, Brussel Sprouts, cauliflowers and broccoli have the nutrients they need to grow well.  But don't roll your eyes...these are among the prettiest edibles to grow and yes, they are good for you!

gardenia flowers

Gardenia

Gardenias are stunning evergreen shrubs with glossy green leaves and fragrant white or cream flowers.   They flower from late spring to early summer and then spot flower throughout the warmer months of the year.   They can be grown as specimen plants, standards, mass planted or planted into hedges.

Gardenias prefer full sun to part shade positions and need to be protected from frosts. Ideal growing positions have morning sun and afternoon shade.  Regular deep watering throughout the warmer months usually about twice a week but it depends on the weather.  Prune after flowering.  Fertilise gardenias on a regular basis.  We recommend Harry’s Camellia Food and applying a seaweed solution like Seasol monthly.  Pests and Diseases that affect Gardenias include scale, which is controlled with Pest Oil or Eco Oil.

TIP The delicate flowers bruise easily when touched, so if picking for a vase take care not to touch them.

Eden Gardens at Macquarie Park has rearranged things to make room for the HUGE range of Camellias now in store grown by Bill Parker.  Just about ready to flower, we have everything from Camellia sinensis, which is what tea is made of, to unusual fish tail camellias, the huge flowered Reticulata species and the good old fashioned japonicas, perfect for a shady garden.

To find out more about Camellias, how to grow them and what's in store, ask one of our friendly staff in the garden centre or read on.  To find out about Bill Parker and his Camellia tips click here...

YOTS Morning Tea

YOTS Morning Tea

What a lovely morning was spent celebrating the achievements of many students and listening to Father Chris Riley talk about the kids and schools that are parts of this great organisation and it was terrific to hear of the two new schools recently opened, one at the Central Coast and another at La Perouse.

There were so many people at hand helping with the morning tea, and we were entertained with lovely renditions of Clean Bandit's "Rockabye" and Atomic Kitten's "You Make Me Whole Again".

Fabulous food, friends, fundraising and a garden tour where just some of the day's highlights. Read on to hear Father Chris Riley chat about his relationship with Eden Gardens....

Over a hundred years ago, when women where in full flight fighting for the vote, button hole flowers held secret messages of support to fellow suffragettes.  They wore purple for loyalty and dignity, white for purity, and green for hope.  Selfridges and Liberty sold tricolour-striped ribbon for hats, belts, rosettes and badges, as well as coloured garments, underwear, handbags, shoes, slippers and toilet soap.

Today, our new florist at Flowers by Eden has made a button hole in their honour.

Tomorrow, Eden Gardens will be holding a special morning tea with the City of Ryde to celebrate.
